There are also models that mop and charge on their own which can be essential for those who have pets or kids. A majority of the top performers in our tests have great obstacles to avoid.
1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO
The i3+ EVO is identical to its sibling the i3 EVO. They differ only in that the i3+ comes with self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is a great option for those who want an automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but are willing to manually empty the dustbin of the robot when it is full.
Both robots are proficient at picking up surface dirt on floors and carpets and can navigate around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes a smart maps of your home to aid the i3+ in its navigation and clean efficiently. However, unlike the i7+ and other top rated robots we evaluated the i3+ doesn't have any obstacle-avoidance features and therefore it could get stuck on things such as power cords or socks, and may have issues in navigating through transitions between surfaces like hardwood to carpet.
iRobot recommends clearing areas that the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, including clearing out any clutter or toys it may come across. It's also an excellent idea to keep the bin and filter clear so they don't become clogged with dirt. If the i3+'s internal bin is empty or the battery is depleted, it returns to the docking station and automatically takes the dirt out of the docking station’s external dustbin. Then it continues cleaning where it left off. Battery life is about an hour and a half of continuous usage. It takes about three hours to charge.
2. Roomba from iRobot
The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line, and it comes with the most recent features. It's self-charging, self-navigating and the most important feature of all -- it has an auto-emptying dustbin, which eliminates one of the primary sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.
The Roomba i7+ can remember up to 10 floor plans and their names thanks to Imprint Smart Mapping, an application that allows it to map rooms so it can clean them more efficiently. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and direct your robot by voice or via the app.
The i7+ is faster and more maneuverable in our tests compared to the eufy RoboVac G30. It also removed large pet hair pieces from all surfaces including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is the self-emptying bin which eliminates the main sources of maintenance and lowers the cost of recurring maintenance.
We were also impressed by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services which we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning session and move around the room and sweep a specific space. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. After being connected, to voice commands to the i7+ for example "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options to manage i7+ settings and evaluating the performance.
3. Dyson Cyclone V10
This tiny Dyson model is an athletic car that is amidst a sea of cordless vacuums that feel like minivans and buses. It's powerful and has features to replace a stand-up vacuum in many households however, it can also fit nicely on the coffee table or shelves that you can spin around like an enchanted device.
The V10 is powered by a 7-cell energy-dense Lithium-ion battery that produces power that is not fading for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filtration system removes allergens, and then releases cleaner air back into your home. Its cleaning head is specially designed and drives stiff nylon bristles deep into carpets to trap large particles and fine dust. It comes with three suction modes to suit the task at hand. It can quickly switch between handheld and floor vacuum and vice versa.
This model has a dock which charges the Dyson to 100% within 3.5 hours. It also gives the ability to connect two attachments as well as an handheld. This is a major improvement over earlier Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.
The biggest issue with the V10 is its short run time. The claims of its marketing that it can provide up to 60 minutes of running time are not true as CR's tests show. This is a typical and not a remarkable time to run a battery-powered cordless vac. It's still enough time to clean most of a typical-sized home but not long enough to clean every spot (though a second run-through usually can be effective). This model has its own advantages, however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than older Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is significantly better on carpets with low pile.
4. iRobot Roomba 694"
One of iRobot's most adored robot vacuums the 694 is an entry-level model that's a great option for those who don't want to spend too much on a robot. It's capable of sucking up a variety of types of debris and sizes during our tests, and often passes over the same areas several times to give a thorough clean. Its flat front side helps to get into corners and along the walls' edges and walls, which is a nice addition.
Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt technology to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home. It's not equipped with the ability to map that is found in more advanced models, like our top picks, i3+EVO and j7+ Series. Because of this, it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords or furniture that isn't as sturdy, and often is power-depleted before returning to its home base.
The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in all aspects because it has fewer parts that require regular maintenance It also comes with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, incurs lower recurring costs, has more advanced automation capabilities and does a better job moving itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and can charge faster.
The eufy RoboVac X8 has a superior battery longevity than the Roomba 694. It also has physical boundaries strips that can be controlled using the voice assistant on your smartphone. It is also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and is more effective on low-pile and bare floors.
5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+
Samsung is a name that is seen on a variety of electronic gadgets for your home So it's no surprise that they're one of the top robotic vacuum and mop makers. Jet Bot AI+ has an advanced onboard technology that allows for navigation and obstacle avoidance.
The app gives you plenty of options to customize your robotic cleaner, such as virtual barriers mopping water levels, behavior modification docking frequency settings and more. It's simple to comprehend and is user-friendly, which is the case with other Samsung devices.
In auto vacuum in our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and it cleaned up 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). It was not as successful in avoiding taller objects like socks or cords. This was disappointing. It's also more expensive than some of the other models we tested which could be a deal-breaker for certain shoppers.
The smart vacuum comes with an onboard camera that you can access through the app. You can also set up a live streaming from the robot's cleaning station. Plus, you can monitor the vacuum's battery status and return it to its dock to charge at the touch of the button. The app also lets you to personalize the lights on top of the vacuum by using different colors, so that you can easily tell what areas it's focusing on or where it's got stuck.
The app allows you to steer the robot manually when needed. My living room rug, for instance is darkly colored that could cause trouble for other robots. The HRV 425BL however continued to travel across the border without registering the cliff. The ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving benefit.
